In
February 1959 the Papakura Bridge Club was formed. At the time Papakura
was a bustling business centre surrounded by a large farming community,
the Papakura Army Camp, and the Teachers Training College and Engineering
Campus for the University of Auckland at Ardmore. Players also came from
Clevedon, Pukekohe and Manurewa.
Play
commenced upstairs in the Star Theatre in Averill Street. In 1971, a
building that was previously used by the Auckland University Engineering
School was purchased by the club and moved to its site in Opaheke Road on
to land leased from the Council.
The
clubrooms have been extended and renovated over the years to provide a
great local facility for club members today, with entry from both Opaheke
Road and the carpark in the rear accessed via the lane adjacent to the Croquet
Club, off Chapel Street.
